TimeToJapan ("we", "our", or "us") operates the website timetojapan.com. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website.

2. Information We Collect

Automatically Collected Information

When you visit our website, we may automatically collect certain information, including your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URLs, and information about how you interact with our site. This data is collected through cookies and similar technologies, subject to your consent preferences.

Accounts

An account is optional. If you create one, we store your email address and your sign-in method (email and password, or Google sign-in) with Supabase, the database and sign-in service we use. If you sign in with Google, Google shares your email address, name, and profile picture with us. Each account also gets a random display name (like "Traveler_a3f7") for community features, so your real name is never shown publicly.

Trip Planner Data

Without an account, the trips you create in our Trip Planner are saved in your browser's storage (localStorage) on your device. With an account, your trips are saved to your account so they sync across devices. People you invite to a trip can see it, and so can anyone who has a share link you created. The site owner can also view trips saved to an account, read-only, to find and fix problems in the planner and to improve it. We never change your trip, and it is not shown to anyone else.

Planner Usage Summaries

To see how the planner is used and make it better, the planner sends a short summary of each trip to our servers, with or without an account. The summary records how the trip was started (for example, which of our itinerary templates you used), its length, the month it starts and how far ahead it was planned, the number of travelers, the cities on the route (only names of destinations covered on this site), the nights in each city, whether you chose one of our recommended hotels or marked a stay as booked, how many activities and transport legs the trip has, and on how many days it was opened. It never includes the trip's name, your notes, hotel names you type in yourself, booking or confirmation numbers, or your name or email address. A summary of a trip made without an account is tied only to a random ID for that trip, so we cannot tell who made it.

Booking Link Clicks

When you click a link to one of our booking partners (such as Stay22, Booking.com, or Klook), we count the click on our own server so we know which pages and hotels are useful to readers. The count records the page you were on, the link's text (usually a hotel or place name), which partner it leads to, and whether you were signed in. It does not use cookies, and it stores no IP address, device ID, or anything else that could identify you, so a click cannot be traced back to a person.

4. Cookies and Tracking

5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Supabase: our database and sign-in provider. It stores accounts, trips saved to an account, planner usage summaries, and booking link click counts.
  • Google: only if you choose Google sign-in.
  • Google Analytics: for website traffic analysis (subject to your cookie consent)
  • Vercel Web Analytics: counts page views without cookies. Our hosting provider Vercel records the page, the referring site, and your country, device type, and browser. Visitors are counted with an anonymous code made from the request that cannot be used to identify you or follow you across other websites.
  • Stay22: hotel price maps and hotel links (see our Cookie Policy)
  • Affiliate Partners: when you click on affiliate links (e.g., Booking.com, Klook), you are directed to third-party websites governed by their own privacy policies

6. Data Retention

Account details and trips saved to an account are kept until you delete the trips or ask us to delete your account. Trips made without an account stay in your browser until you delete them or clear your browser storage. Planner usage summaries and booking link click counts are kept so we can follow trends over time. Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics' standard retention policies.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have certain rights regarding your personal data, including the right to access, correct, or delete your data. To get a copy of your account data, or to have your account and its trips deleted, email privacy@timetojapan.com from the address on your account. You can manage cookies at any time through your browser settings or our consent preferences.
