Okinawa Itinerary: 7 Days of Beaches, Reefs and Ryukyu Culture
A week in Japan's subtropical south: two nights in Naha for Shuri Castle and Ryukyu food, two on the Onna coast for the Blue Cave and the whale sharks of Churaumi Aquarium, then a one-hour flight to Ishigaki for Kabira Bay and a day on Taketomi, where water-buffalo carts still roll down the sand lanes. Beach days, a rental car, and no bullet trains.
Okinawa is the part of Japan that trades temples and bullet trains for coral reefs, palm trees, and the food of a former island kingdom. This 7-day route is built to relax rather than march: two nights in the capital Naha for Shuri Castle, Kokusai-dori, and Makishi Market, two nights on the Onna coast for beach time, the Blue Cave snorkel spot, and a day drive north to the whale sharks of Churaumi Aquarium, then a one-hour flight south to Ishigaki for Kabira Bay and a 15-minute ferry to the old village of Taketomi. Outside Naha the buses are infrequent and the good beaches are not near a station, so you need a rental car; this plan picks it up on the morning you drive north, since the Naha days are covered by the monorail and your feet.
The pace leaves whole afternoons open for the water, which is the point of coming here. April to June and September to October are the usual picks: the sea is warm enough to swim and you miss the July and August crowds. Each has a catch. The rainy season runs from about May 10 to June 21 in an average year, and typhoons pass near Okinawa about twice in September and once in October on the Japan Meteorological Agency's averages, so keep some slack around the flights. Arrive at Naha Airport, monorail into town
The Yui Rail monorail takes 13 minutes to Kencho-mae (290 yen) and 16 to Makishi (320 yen), the two stations for Kokusai-dori. Suica, ICOCA, PASMO and the other national IC cards work, on a card or a phone, but the monorail does not sell them; without one, buy a ticket at the machine. Skip the rental car for the Naha days: parking costs more than the monorail and the center is walkable

Shuri Castle
The red-lacquered palace of the Ryukyu kings. Its main hall burned in 2019 and reopens, rebuilt, on November 23, 2026 (the park is closed on November 22 and the paid area opens at noon on the 23rd); the outer gates and stone walls came through the fire. From November 23 the paid area costs 1,000 yen (400 yen before), and going inside the main hall needs a timed ticket booked online at no extra charge; for visits from January 2027, tickets go on sale at 1 PM on the 1st of the month two months ahead. Without one you still see the courtyard and the hall from a viewing deck. Open 8:30 AM to 7 PM April to November (last entry 6:30), to 6 PM December to March. Allow 90 minutes to 2 hours, plus about 20 minutes' walk from Shuri Station; the park expects 8:30 to 11 AM to be the busiest time. A Yui Rail 1-day pass (1,000 yen, 24 hours) shown at the ticket window gets the group price, 800 yen instead of 1,000

Tsuboya pottery street and lunch
A stone-paved lane of kilns and studios making yachimun, Okinawa's folk pottery, and shops selling shisa figures. The Tsuboya Pottery Museum is closed for repairs until March 31, 2027. For lunch, look for goya champuru, the bitter-melon, tofu, egg, and pork stir-fry that turns up on every local menu
Makishi Public Market
Tropical fish, sea grapes, and pork in every form. Buy fish or meat at a stall downstairs and a restaurant upstairs will cook it for a separate charge (last cooking order 7:45 PM). The market moved into a new building in March 2023. Open 8 AM to 10 PM, varying by shop; closed the fourth Sunday of the month except in December

Do you need a car in Okinawa?
For this itinerary, yes, on both the main island and Ishigaki. The Yui Rail monorail runs only from the airport through Naha to Urasoe, and elsewhere the buses are infrequent and slow, so a rental car is what makes Cape Manzamo, the Blue Cave, Churaumi Aquarium, and Kabira Bay realistic in one trip. Driving is on the left. Bring your home licence plus an International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention type); licences from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan need an official Japanese translation from JAF instead. You can skip the car only if you stay in Naha and join guided day tours.
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
April to June and September to October, each with a catch. April and early May bring warm water before the summer heat, but the rainy season covers roughly May 10 to June 21 in an average year (in 2026 it ran May 4 to June 29). September and October are still warm enough to swim, but typhoons are not over: on the Japan Meteorological Agency's averages, about two pass near Okinawa in August, almost two in September and one in October, and they can cancel island flights and ferries for a day or two. July and August are hot and busy. Winter is mild and cheap but too cool for comfortable swimming, better for whale watching around the Kerama Islands than for the beach.
Okinawa main island or the outer islands like Ishigaki?
This trip does both, which is the easiest way to understand the difference. The main island around Naha and Onna has the big sights, Shuri Castle, Churaumi Aquarium, the resort beaches, and the most road traffic. The Yaeyama Islands around Ishigaki, about 400 km further southwest and closer to Taiwan, are quieter, with Kabira Bay and tiny Taketomi with its red-tiled village and buffalo carts. If you only have time for one, the main island is the easier first visit; the Ishigaki leg is for the smaller islands and the quieter water.
How do you get to Okinawa?
You fly. Naha Airport on the main island has frequent flights from Tokyo (about 2.5 to 3 hours), Osaka, Fukuoka, and several Asian hubs, and it sits at the end of the Yui Rail monorail into the city. There is no train or bridge from the rest of Japan, so flying is the only practical way in. Ishigaki has its own airport with some direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka, but this route reaches it on a one-hour hop from Naha so you see the main island first. Book island flights early for summer and autumn, when typhoons can disrupt schedules.
