Okinawa Itinerary: 7 Days of Beaches, Reefs and Ryukyu Culture

Okinawa is the part of Japan that trades temples and bullet trains for coral reefs, palm trees, and the food of a former island kingdom. This 7-day route is built to relax rather than march: two nights in the capital Naha for Shuri Castle, Kokusai-dori, and Makishi Market, two nights on the Onna coast for beach time, the Blue Cave snorkel spot, and a day drive north to the whale sharks of Churaumi Aquarium, then a one-hour flight south to Ishigaki for Kabira Bay and an easy ferry hop to the old village of Taketomi. Outside central Naha the buses are thin and the good beaches are not near a station, so a rental car is essential; this plan picks it up on the morning you drive north, since the Naha days are covered by the monorail and your feet.
The pace leaves whole afternoons open for the water, which is the point of coming here. Aim for April to June or September to October, when the sea is warm but the summer typhoons and the peak rainy weeks are mostly behind or ahead of you. Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need a car in Okinawa?
For this itinerary, yes, on both the main island and Ishigaki. The Yui Rail monorail only covers central Naha, and everywhere else the bus service is infrequent and slow, so a rental car is what makes Cape Manzamo, the Blue Cave, Churaumi Aquarium, and Kabira Bay realistically reachable. A compact car runs roughly 7,000 to 9,000 yen a day, driving is on the left, and most foreign visitors need an International Driving Permit or an official Japanese translation of their licence. You can skip the car only if you plan to stay put in Naha and join guided day tours instead.
When is the best time to visit Okinawa?
Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spots. April to June brings warm water and sunshine before the worst of the summer heat, though the short rainy season usually falls across May into mid-June. September and October are warm and good for swimming once the peak typhoon risk of August starts to ease. July and August are hot, busy, and the highest risk for typhoons that can cancel island flights and ferries. Winter is mild and cheap but too cool for comfortable swimming, better for whale watching in the Kerama Islands than for the beach.
Okinawa main island or the outer islands like Ishigaki?
This trip does both, which is the easiest way to understand the difference. The main island around Naha and Onna has the big sights, Shuri Castle, Churaumi Aquarium, the resort beaches, and the most road traffic. The Yaeyama Islands around Ishigaki, 400 km further south and closer to Taiwan, are quieter and more tropical, with clearer water, Kabira Bay, and tiny Taketomi with its Ryukyu cottages and buffalo carts. If you only had time for one, the main island is the more convenient first visit, but the flight to Ishigaki is what turns a good trip into a memorable one.
How do you get to Okinawa?
You fly. Naha Airport on the main island has frequent flights from Tokyo (about 2.5 to 3 hours), Osaka, Fukuoka, and several Asian hubs, and it sits at the end of the Yui Rail monorail into the city. There is no train or bridge from the rest of Japan, so flying is the only practical way in. Ishigaki has its own airport with some direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka, but this route reaches it on a short one-hour hop from Naha so you see the main island first. Book island flights early in summer, when typhoons can disrupt schedules.
