What's Confirmed So Far (Updated November 3)

New on November 1: Kobe Luminarie's tickets are on sale. Advance tickets for the paid part of Meriken Park cost 500 yen on weekdays and 750 yen at weekends, in timed slots from 17:30, with no changes or refunds. The lights run from dusk to 21:30, January 29 to February 7, and the rest of the event is free.

Marunouchi's hours are out. Tokyo's Marunouchi Illumination runs November 12, 2026 to February 14, 2027, about 572,000 champagne-gold lights along Naka-dori, on from 16:00 to 23:00 and until midnight through December. From November 27 to December 25 the Gyoko-dori avenue from Tokyo Station to the Imperial Palace is lit as well, with a Christmas market on Naka-dori from November 12. All of it is free.

The lights are on. Nabana no Sato and Ashikaga Flower Fantasy both opened on October 17, the first two events on this page to run. Nabana goes on until May 31, so there is no rush; Ashikaga runs to February 14, with the night session from 15:30 and the lights from about 16:30. The anchors of the rest of the season are locked in too: the Sapporo Snow Festival runs February 4 to 11, 2027, the Otaru Snow Light Path overlaps it on February 6 to 13, and the Kobe Luminarie is set for January 29 to February 7.

The urgent one is Shirakawa-go: bus tours for all four light-up evenings are on sale now: January 11 since October 13, January 17 since October 19, January 24 since October 26 and January 31, the last, since November 2. Nohi Bus from Takayama charges 13,000 yen, or 16,000 yen with the observation deck ticket. The overnight-stay lottery has closed, and winners are told on November 10. It was the only way to a village bed on a light-up night, and those two, a lottery stay or a bus tour that includes the ticket, are the only ways to the observation deck. The first parking round has already sold out; the second opens December 1. If those four January evenings are on your wishlist, that section below is the one to read today.

From earlier this month: Zao's snow monster light-up is confirmed for December 26 to February 23, on 31 nights (mostly weekends and holidays), with the ropeway running 17:00 to 21:00. Yokote's kamakura nights (February 12 and 13) are official too, and Hokkaido's board is complete (Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa, Lake Shikotsu, and Sounkyo). Lake Shikotsu has posted its visitor details: tickets at the gate only, and a reserved shuttle from New Chitose Airport for 2,000 yen each way. Still to come: Tokyo Midtown and the Shibuya Blue Cave, which normally land between now and November. Each announcement gets logged here within days.

How Japan's Winter Dates Land

Japan's winter events publish their dates in a predictable trickle rather than all at once: illuminations and the reservation systems announce from September through November, the Hokkaido snow festivals confirm through autumn, and a few classics (Chichibu on December 2 and 3, Nozawa's fire festival on January 15) sit on fixed dates every year. The catch is that the booking deadlines often arrive months before the events themselves, and the strictest ones, like Shirakawa-go's, sell out the day they open.

• 2026-11-03 (Chitose Tourism Association (2027 festival guide)): The Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival has posted its 2027 visitor details: tickets are sold only at the gate (1,000 yen on weekdays, 3,000 yen at weekends and holidays, cash, cards or PayPay), and a reserved-seat shuttle, the Hyoto Blue Liner, runs from New Chitose Airport via JR Chitose Station on every festival day for 2,000 yen one way, bookable until 20:30 the day before.
• 2026-11-02 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Nohi Bus (bus tour sales)): The last of Shirakawa-go's four bus tour sales opened on November 2 at 14:00 Japan time: tours for January 31 join January 11, 17 and 24, so all four evenings are now on sale. Neither the tourist association nor Nohi Bus has posted a sold-out notice for any date.
• 2026-11-01 (Kobe Luminarie Organizing Committee (ticket page); Shirakawa-go Tourist Association): Advance tickets for the paid part of Kobe Luminarie's Meriken Park venue are on sale: 500 yen on weekdays and 750 yen at weekends, for a timed slot between 17:30 and 21:30, online through Asoview, eplus, CN Playguide, Lawson Ticket, KANSAI MaaS and tabiwa by WESTER or at convenience store machines. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded. Shirakawa-go's overnight-stay lottery has closed; winners hear on November 10.
• 2026-10-30 (Kobe Luminarie Organizing Committee (press release, October 30)): Kobe Luminarie has named its 32nd edition's theme, "Un porto. Mille luci. Mille armonie.", and its hours: dusk to 21:30 from January 29 to February 7, 2027. The works are Eternal Sunshine at Meriken Park, The Tower of Peace at Higashi Yuenchi and Music Box in the former Foreign Settlement. Advance tickets for the paid part of Meriken Park go on sale on November 1: 500 yen on weekdays, 750 yen at weekends, in timed entry slots from 17:30.
• 2026-10-29 (Mitsubishi Estate (Marunouchi Bright Holiday press release)): Marunouchi has posted its hours. The Marunouchi Illumination, in its 25th year, lights about 200 trees along roughly 1.2 km of Naka-dori with about 572,000 champagne-gold lights from November 12, 2026 to February 14, 2027, from 16:00 to 23:00 and until midnight from December 1 to 31; on November 12 the switch-on ceremony shifts the start. New this year: the Gyoko-dori avenue from Tokyo Station to the Imperial Palace is lit from November 27 to December 25, 16:00 to midnight, with a Harry Potter Christmas tree and 15 food huts, and a Christmas market runs on Naka-dori from November 12 to December 25, 11:00 to 22:00. Entry to all of it is free.
• 2026-10-26 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Nohi Bus (bus tour sales)): The third of Shirakawa-go's four bus tour sales opened on October 26 at 14:00 Japan time: tours for the January 24 light-up are now on sale alongside January 11 and January 17, and the last evening, January 31, follows on November 2. Neither the tourist association nor Nohi Bus has posted a sold-out notice for any date.
• 2026-10-19 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Nohi Bus (bus tour sales), Jigokudani Yaen-koen official site): The second of Shirakawa-go's four bus tour sales opened on October 19 at 14:00 Japan time: tours for the January 17 light-up are now on sale alongside January 11, with January 24 next on October 26 and January 31 on November 2. Neither the tourist association nor Nohi Bus has posted a sold-out notice for January 11. Jigokudani Monkey Park's site now says that from December through April, visitors who bought their ticket online get priority entry, one more reason to book the web ticket before a winter visit.
• 2026-10-17 (Nagashima Resort (Nabana no Sato) and Ashikaga Flower Park official sites): The illumination season is on. Nabana no Sato and Ashikaga Flower Fantasy both opened on October 17, the first two events on this page to run. Nabana goes on until May 31 and asks visitors to print tickets at a FamilyMart or 7-Eleven before coming; its main-show theme was still unnamed on opening day. Ashikaga runs to February 14, with day and night sold as separate sessions, the night session from 15:30 and lights from about 16:30, and a countdown switch-on with live music on the opening weekend. Next on the calendar: the January 17 Shirakawa-go bus tours go on sale on October 19 at 14:00 Japan time.
• 2026-10-13 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association and Nohi Bus (bus tour sales), Ashikaga Flower Park (opening event)): Bus tours to the Shirakawa-go light-up are on sale, one evening at a time. Sales for January 11 opened on October 13 at 14:00 Japan time with all five operators (Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway, Hokutetsu Bus and Iruka Kotsu); January 17 opens on October 19, January 24 on October 26 and January 31 on November 2, each at 14:00. Nohi Bus, which runs from Takayama, sells two tours: 13,000 yen without the observation deck, and 16,000 yen with the deck ticket, booked online only and for six people at most per booking. A tour with the deck ticket is the only way up to the night view short of winning the overnight lottery, which stays open until October 31. Also new: Ashikaga Flower Park will open its Flower Fantasy with a countdown switch-on and live music on October 17 and 18. Nothing yet from Tokyo Midtown or the Shibuya Blue Cave, and Marunouchi has not posted its lighting hours.
• 2026-10-04 (Zao Ropeway official site (2026-27 light-up and night tour notices)): Zao Ropeway has published its winter calendar: the snow monster light-up runs December 26, 2026 to February 23, 2027, on 31 nights rather than every night. Those are December 26, 27, 30 and 31; January 1 to 3, 9 to 11, 16, 17, 22 to 24 and 29 to 31; and February 5 to 7, 10 to 14 and 19 to 23. The ropeway runs 17:00 to 21:00 on those evenings, with the last ride up at 19:45, and the round trip to the summit station costs 4,600 yen (2,300 yen for ages 6 to 11). The Night Cruiser snowcat tour among the lit trees runs on the same nights at 8,000 yen, by reservation only, and bookings open online seven days before each date. Thirteen of the 14 dated events on this page are now confirmed.
• 2026-10-01 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association official site (lottery opened, first-round parking sold out)): Shirakawa-go's overnight-stay lottery opened today at 13:00 Japan time and takes applications until October 31 at 23:59. You apply by email, and only once: the association voids every application from anyone who applies for more than one date or inn, and the name on the application has to match the guest who stays. Every lottery stay includes a ticket for the observation deck. Winners, and only winners, hear by email on November 10; if any of them decline, a first-come round opens November 26 at 13:00. The association also reports that the first round of light-up parking has sold out; the second round goes on sale December 1 at 13:00, at 7,000 yen per car (10,000 yen for 6 to 10 people). Bus tours go on sale from October 13, one event date at a time. Nothing else moved: Zao, Tokyo Midtown, the Shibuya Blue Cave and Nabana's theme are still pending.
• 2026-09-29 (Jigokudani Yaen-koen official site (admission fee notice of 2026-09-20)): Jigokudani Monkey Park raises admission from December 1, 2026: adults 1,000 yen (was 800) and children 500 yen (was 400) at the gate, with web tickets at 880 and 440 yen, so booking online is now the cheaper way in.
• 2026-09-27 (Mitsubishi Estate, Kobe Luminarie, Chitose and Nabana no Sato official sites): Marunouchi is the first of Tokyo's big three to confirm: Mitsubishi Estate has announced the Marunouchi Illumination for November 12, 2026 to February 14, 2027, champagne-gold lights along about 1.2 km of Naka-dori, with a Harry Potter holiday program through December 25 and hours due in late October. Kobe Luminarie's organizers have set prices for the paid part of the Meriken Park venue (500 yen weekdays and 750 yen at weekends in advance), Lake Shikotsu's tourism board lists admission at 1,000 yen on weekdays and 3,000 yen at weekends, and Nabana no Sato needs date-specific advance tickets for December 23 to 25. Correction from this sweep: last season the Shibuya Blue Cave ran only December 4 to 25, not from October as this page had said.
• 2026-09-25 (Ashikaga Flower Park and Yokote City official sites (confirmed dates)): Ashikaga Flower Park has posted its 25th Flower Fantasy: October 17, 2026 to February 14, 2027, closed only December 31, with lights on from about 17:00 and admission now 1,500 yen for adults. Yokote City's own tourism page confirms the kamakura festival's new schedule, the second Friday and Saturday of February, so 2027 is February 12 and 13, not the February 15 and 16 still printed across the web. Otaru's tourism association has confirmed February 6 to 13 for the Snow Light Path, and the Hokkaido Shimbun reports the canal's floating glass buoys switch from candles to electric lights this edition. Tokyo is still pending: an events listing now shows Marunouchi's street lights for November 12 to February 14, but the organizers haven't announced it.
• 2026-09-23 (Sounkyo tourist association official site (confirmed dates)): The 52nd Sounkyo Onsen Ice Fall Festival is official: January 23 to March 7, 2027, Saturday to Sunday, with weekday hours 17:00 to 21:30 and weekends open from 11:00. That completes Hokkaido's board: Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa, Lake Shikotsu, and now Sounkyo all have confirmed dates, and the first week of February still lines all five up. Elsewhere no movement this sweep: Nabana no Sato's official page shows October 17 to May 31 but no theme yet, Ashikaga's site is still on last season's run, and Zao, Marunouchi's full window, Midtown, and the Blue Cave remain pending.
• 2026-09-21 (Asahikawa Winter Festival official site (confirmed dates)): The 68th Asahikawa Winter Festival is confirmed for February 6 to 11, 2027, Saturday through the Foundation Day holiday, overlapping the Sapporo Snow Festival week as always; a Hokkaido trip in that window can now lock in all four festival cities. One caution for planners using booking sites: some tour listings still show last year's weekdays for these dates. Tokyo also moved for the first time: listings show Marunouchi's holiday event running November 12 to December 25 with a Harry Potter collaboration, though the official word on the full street-illumination window (normally into mid February) is still to come. Sounkyo's official pages remain on the 2026 edition, so its January 23 to March 7 dates stay provisional.
• 2026-09-18 (Asahikawa Winter Festival official site): The 68th Asahikawa Winter Festival is officially confirmed for 2027. Exact dates are still to be posted, but tour operators are already selling packages for February 6 to 11, which matches the festival's usual Saturday-to-holiday pattern and would overlap the Sapporo festival week as always. Elsewhere the board is unchanged: Tokyo's illuminations, Ashikaga, Zao's light-up calendar, and Sounkyo's official dates are all still pending, right on their usual autumn schedule.
• 2026-09-16 (Season opening summary (page launch)): The 2026-27 board so far: Sapporo Snow Festival February 4 to 11, Otaru Snow Light Path February 6 to 13, Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival January 30 to February 23, Kobe Luminarie January 29 to February 7, and Nabana no Sato running October 17 through May 31 are all confirmed. Still waiting on official dates for Tokyo's big illuminations, Ashikaga Flower Fantasy, Zao's juhyo light-up, and the Asahikawa Winter Festival, all of which normally land between late September and November.
• 2026-09-10 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association (reservation milestone)): First-round parking reservations for the January light-up evenings went on sale at 13:00 (6,000 yen per car for 1 to 5 people). These are the cheapest way in and the rounds sell through; the second, pricier round opens December 1, and the overnight-stay lottery takes applications October 1 to 31.
• 2026-07-01 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association (official announcement)): The 41st winter light-up is confirmed for four evenings: January 11, 17, 24, and 31, 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30. As in recent years the event is reservation-only, with an entrance gate from 15:30 and no tickets sold on the day.

Building a Trip Around These Dates

Late November to late December: the illumination season. Tokyo's displays, Nabana no Sato, and Ashikaga are all running, the Chichibu Night Festival lands on December 2 and 3, and flights and hotels stay reasonable until the New Year week. Skies are the clearest of the year, which also makes this the best window for Mt Fuji views.

Mid to late January: the connoisseur window. Shirakawa-go's four light-up evenings, Nozawa's fire festival on the 15th, the Kobe Luminarie from the 29th, and the snow monkeys at their most photogenic, with the fewest tourists of the whole winter in between the marquee dates.

The first two weeks of February: the crescendo. Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa, and Lake Shikotsu all run at once in Hokkaido's festival week, Yokote's snow huts glow on the 12th and 13th, and Zao's snow monsters hit their full shapes. It is the single best week of Japan's winter, and the one that demands the earliest hotel bookings.
