What's Confirmed So Far (Updated September 16)
The anchors of the season are already locked in: the Sapporo Snow Festival runs February 4 to 11, 2027, the Otaru Snow Light Path overlaps it on February 6 to 13, the Kobe Luminarie is set for January 29 to February 7, and Nabana no Sato's marathon illumination is confirmed from October 17 all the way to May 31.
The urgent one is Shirakawa-go: the 2027 light-up is reservation-only, and the first parking round went on sale September 10. The overnight-stay lottery, the only way to a village bed and the night observation deck, takes applications October 1 to 31. Sapporo Snow Festival 2027 Dates: February 4 to 11
The 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival is confirmed for February 4 to 11, with the Odori Park and Susukino sites running the full eight days and the family-oriented Tsudome site's exact window usually confirmed closer in. Entry to all three sites is free, the big sculptures are lit until 22:00, and the international snow sculpture contest and nightly projection mapping give Odori a reason to visit twice, once by day and once after dark. The 2027 Otaru Snow Light Path runs February 6 to 13, lit nightly from 17:00 to 21:00 along the canal and the old Temiya rail line. It is the intimate counterpart to Sapporo's giant sculptures: hand-carved snow lanterns, candles floating on the canal in glass fishing buoys, and volunteers relighting wicks as the wind takes them. Early listings point to February 6 to 11, 2027 for the Asahikawa Winter Festival, but the official confirmation normally lands in autumn and this page will log it when it does. The draw is scale: the main snow stage on the Ishikari riverbank has held world records for the largest snow structure, and the ice sculpture contest along the Heiwa-dori shopping street is arguably Japan's best. Early listings have the 2027 Sounkyo Onsen Ice Fall Festival running January 23 to March 7, the longest window of Hokkaido's winter festivals, with official dates due in autumn. Ice towers, tunnels, and domes are grown over weeks from sprayed river water in the Daisetsuzan gorge, then floodlit every evening; on winter weekends there are fireworks over the ice. Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival 2027: January 30 to February 23
The 2027 Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival is listed for January 30 to February 23, open 10:00 to 20:00 with the illumination from 16:30, and as always the exact window can shift with the weather since the whole site is grown from sprayed lake water. Shikotsu's water is famously clear, so the ice takes on a natural blue that none of the other Hokkaido festivals match; by night it is lit in changing colors. The lake is 45 minutes from New Chitose Airport, which makes the festival an easy first or last evening of a Hokkaido winter trip.
Yokote Kamakura Festival 2027: February 12 and 13, Not the 15th
The 2027 Yokote Kamakura Festival is expected on February 12 and 13, because since 2026 the festival runs on the second Friday of February and the following Saturday; most of the internet still lists the traditional February 15 and 16, which are no longer the dates. From 18:00 to 21:00, hundreds of kamakura snow huts glow across town between Yokote Station and Yokote Castle, and stepping inside one to be served amazake and mochi by local children is the whole, gentle point. Yokote's own hotels are few and go first for festival nights; Akita City, about an hour away by train, is the usual fallback base.
Zao Snow Monsters 2027: When to See the Juhyo
Zao's 2026-27 light-up calendar is not out yet: last season it ran December 27 to February 22, and the ropeway normally publishes the new winter calendar in October or November, which this page will log. The juhyo themselves follow the cold rather than a calendar: the trees start icing over in late December and the full monster shapes hold from late January to late February, with evening light-ups concentrated on weekends and holidays. Shirakawa-go Light-Up 2027: Four January Dates, Reservation Only
The 41st Shirakawa-go winter light-up is confirmed for January 11, 17, 24, and 31, 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30, and you cannot attend without an advance reservation: an entrance gate operates from 15:30 on event days and no tickets are sold on the day. The ways in are a reserved parking slot (two sales rounds, September 10 and December 1), a reserved bus tour (sales open in stages from mid October), or winning the October overnight-stay lottery, which is also the only route to the famous observation deck at night. Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival 2027: January 15
The Dosojin Fire Festival happens on January 15 every year, 2027 included, in the ski and onsen village of Nozawa in northern Nagano. Men aged 42 and 25, the unlucky ages, build and then defend a seven-metre wooden shrine against waves of torch-carrying villagers before the whole structure is finally burned; the battle proper starts around 20:30 and it is genuinely wild. Note the access rule before planning around it: since 2024 the village admits only its own overnight guests and locals to the festival, a response to overcrowding, so this one is booked as a stay first and a festival second. Chichibu Night Festival 2026: December 2 and 3
The Chichibu Night Festival always runs December 2 and 3, which in 2026 falls on a Wednesday and Thursday; December 2 is the smaller eve and December 3 is the main night. Six-ton lantern-covered floats are hauled through town to drums and flutes, the climax being the slow drag up Dango-zaka after dark, all of it running under a roughly two-hour fireworks show, one of the only major hanabi displays Japan stages in winter. The Red Arrow express from Ikebukuro takes about 80 minutes and extra late trains run on the main night, so Tokyo-based travellers can see the climax and still get home.
Nabana no Sato Illumination 2026-2027: October 17 to May 31
Nabana no Sato's 2026-27 illumination is confirmed for October 17, 2026 through May 31, 2027, closed only January 6 and 7, which at 227 nights is the longest illumination season in Japan by a wide margin. The season's theme for the main show has not been named yet (last season was ZIPANG) and is normally announced by Nagashima Resort in September or early October; the walk-through Tunnel of Light and the water displays return every year regardless. It sits 30 minutes by direct bus from Nagoya Station, and going on a weeknight outside the Christmas fortnight is the difference between strolling the tunnel and shuffling through it.
Ashikaga Flower Fantasy 2026-2027: Dates Due Any Week
Ashikaga Flower Park has not yet published its 2026-27 Flower Fantasy dates: last season ran October 18 to February 15, and the announcement normally lands in September, so expect a mid-October start and watch this page for the confirmation. The park strings over five million LEDs through three themed phases (autumn collaboration, Christmas, then a New Year finale), with the illuminated recreation of its famous spring wisteria as the image everyone comes for. JR Ashikaga Flower Park Station is directly at the gate, about 90 minutes from Tokyo, and admission ran 1,400 yen last season.
Kobe Luminarie 2027: January 29 to February 7
The 32nd Kobe Luminarie is confirmed for January 29 to February 7, 2027, across Meriken Park, Higashi Yuenchi, and the former Foreign Settlement, with lighting hours and advance-ticket details still to be announced. If you knew the Luminarie as a December event, note that it moved: since its post-pandemic return it runs in late January, timed around the anniversary of the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake that it memorializes, and the walk through the hand-painted arcades is meant to be taken at a remembrance pace. Tokyo Winter Illuminations 2026-2027: What's Announced So Far
Tokyo's 2026-27 illumination dates are not out yet; the announcements normally arrive through September and October, and this page will log the big three as they land. Last season is the reliable pattern: Marunouchi's champagne-gold avenue ran November 13 to February 15, Tokyo Midtown's garden lights ran through February 23, and the Shibuya Blue Cave stretched all the way from October 23 to April 5. Jigokudani Monkey Park is open every day all winter (9:00 to 16:00 in the cold months, 800 yen for adults), and the famous scene of macaques soaking in the steaming pool with snow on their heads is most reliable from late December to early March, when cold pushes the troop into the water. Building a Trip Around These Dates
Late November to late December: the illumination season. Tokyo's displays, Nabana no Sato, and Ashikaga are all running, the Chichibu Night Festival lands on December 2 and 3, and flights and hotels stay reasonable until the New Year week. Skies are the clearest of the year, which also makes this the best window for Mt Fuji views.
Mid to late January: the connoisseur window. Shirakawa-go's four light-up evenings, Nozawa's fire festival on the 15th, the Kobe Luminarie from the 29th, and the snow monkeys at their most photogenic, with the fewest tourists of the whole winter in between the marquee dates.
The first two weeks of February: the crescendo. Sapporo, Otaru, Asahikawa, and Lake Shikotsu all run at once in Hokkaido's festival week, Yokote's snow huts glow on the 12th and 13th, and Zao's snow monsters hit their full shapes. It is the single best week of Japan's winter, and the one that demands the earliest hotel bookings.

The park launched online ticketing in August 2026, new for this winter, so for a January or February visit it is worth securing a dated ticket on the official site once your plans are fixed.
