Kyushu Itinerary: 7 Days of Onsen, Volcanoes and Food

Southern Japan on its own terms: Hakata ramen and riverside yatai stalls in Fukuoka, the harbor history and champon of Nagasaki, Kumamoto's castle and Mt Aso's smoking caldera, and two final nights soaking in Beppu, the hot spring capital of Japan.

7 days4 destinations

Kyushu is where Japan turns volcanic, and this 7-day loop is built around the things the southern island does better than anywhere else: open-air hot springs, active craters, and a food culture all its own. You fly into Fukuoka for two nights of tonkotsu ramen and riverside yatai stalls, ride the new Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen to Nagasaki for its harbor history and champon noodles, stop in Kumamoto for one of Japan's great castles, then cross the island past the vast Mt Aso caldera to finish with two nights in Beppu, which pumps out more thermal water than any other town in the country.

The pace keeps the two long rail days light and leaves room to actually sit in the baths rather than race between sights. Most of the route runs on JR Kyushu lines that a rail pass covers, so moving between cities is simple once your dates are set. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Kyushu?

Most people fly. Fukuoka Airport has direct flights from Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Taipei, and other Asian hubs, and it sits just two subway stops from Hakata Station, about five minutes, which makes it the fastest airport-to-city connection in Japan. By land, the Kyushu Shinkansen links Fukuoka to Osaka in about 2.5 hours and to Tokyo in around 5 hours with a change, so it is easy to tack Kyushu onto a wider trip. This itinerary starts and ends in Fukuoka, so flying in and out of there keeps it simple.

Should I base in Beppu or Yufuin for the onsen part?

They offer very different moods. Beppu is the bigger, brasher hot spring town, famous for the Jigoku Meguri, its seven vividly colored 'hells' meant for looking rather than bathing, plus sand baths and steam-cooked food. Yufuin, 30 minutes inland, is smaller and refined, a walkable village of boutique galleries and cafes under Mt Yufu. This route bases in Beppu because it is better connected by train and has more to do, then treats Yufuin as an easy half-day trip, so you can sample both without moving hotels.

Is Kyushu good for a first trip to Japan, or better as a repeat visit?

Both work, but it depends on what you want. If this is your first trip and you dream of the classic Tokyo to Kyoto arc of temples and neon, do the Golden Route first, since Kyushu has little of that. But if you care more about hot springs, volcanoes, and regional food than big-city sights, Kyushu stands on its own even as a first trip. Many travelers save it for a second visit precisely because the standard first itinerary skips it, and it makes an excellent contrast once you have seen the main island.

How many days do I need for Kyushu?

A week is the sweet spot for the northern half covered here: Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Beppu, with a taste of Mt Aso in between. Five days would force you to drop either Nagasaki or the onsen towns, while ten days or more lets you add the south, including Kagoshima and the smoking volcano of Sakurajima, the Kirishima mountains, or the cedar forests of Yakushima. If you only have this one week, the loop below hits the volcanoes, the hot springs, and the distinct food of each city without ever feeling rushed.
