5 Day Kansai Itinerary: Osaka, Kyoto and Nara

Fly into Kansai and skip Tokyo entirely: two nights of Osaka street food with a Nara day trip, then two nights of Kyoto temples. No Shinkansen needed, and apart from the airport trains no ride takes more than 40 minutes.

5 days3 destinations

Kansai packs three very different cities into a small area: Osaka for food, Kyoto for temples, and Nara for the deer and the Great Buddha. This 5-day plan bases you in Osaka for two nights with the Nara day trip in between, then moves you to Kyoto for the final two. Apart from the airport trains, no ride takes more than 40 minutes.

Flying in and out of Kansai International means no backtracking to Tokyo and no Shinkansen tickets at all. Open it in the free trip planner to pin the dates and swap anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for Osaka, Kyoto and Nara?

Yes, because the distances are short. Osaka to Nara is under 40 minutes on the Kintetsu line and Osaka to Kyoto is 30 minutes on the JR Special Rapid, so you lose little time in transit. You get two evenings in Osaka, most of a day in Nara, and two days in Kyoto. That covers the main sights of all three, though the full Kyoto day is a long one.

Should I base myself in Osaka or Kyoto?

This plan splits the difference: two nights in Osaka while it is most convenient for the airport and Nara, then two in Kyoto so you are already in place for early morning temple starts. If you would rather not change hotels, either city works as a single base, but you give up Kyoto evenings or Osaka nightlife depending on which you pick.

How does the Nara day trip work?

Take the Kintetsu line from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara: about 37 minutes on the rapid express, 680 yen each way, no reservation needed. Kintetsu-Nara station is a short walk from Nara Park, much closer than JR Nara. The deer, Todai-ji, and Kasuga Taisha are all in or beside the same park, so half a day of walking covers them and you are back in Osaka for dinner.

Do I need a JR Pass for a Kansai trip?

No. The 7-day national JR Pass costs 50,000 yen, while the JR trains on this route (the Haruka to the airport, Osaka to Kyoto, and the ride to Fushimi Inari) come to under 5,000 yen. The Nara leg uses the private Kintetsu line, which no JR pass covers. Get an ICOCA card at the airport and pay per ride; the trains on this whole itinerary add up to a few thousand yen plus the airport transfers.
