Japan Cherry Blossom Itinerary: 10 Days of Sakura
Chase sakura across Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, then finish at Lake Kawaguchi, where the cherries bloom one to three weeks later under Mt Fuji. Built for late March to mid April.
This 10-day route is built entirely around sakura season: Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen, and the Meguro River in Tokyo, the Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park's lit weeping cherry, and Daigo-ji in Kyoto, a day trip to Osaka Castle and the Okawa riverbank, and two final nights at Lake Kawaguchi for cherry trees framing Mt Fuji.
The order follows the bloom. Tokyo usually opens first, Kyoto and Osaka a few days later, and the lakes below Fuji one to three weeks after that, so ending at Kawaguchiko gives the trip a second chance if the cities peak early. Two nights there also give you two mornings at the Chureito Pagoda, which matters because spring haze often hides the mountain. ¥500, opens 9 AM, and open on Mondays from March 25 to April 24. About 900 cherry trees of some 70 varieties, so something is in bloom from February to late April. Frequently Asked Questions
When exactly should I book this trip?
Aim for a start date between about March 25 and April 2. Tokyo's cherries usually peak in late March to early April, Kyoto's from the last days of March into early April, and the Fuji Five Lakes in early to mid April, sometimes later. Book refundable flights and hotels for that window, then watch the forecasts that start in late winter; our cherry blossom tracker follows them.
What if I miss peak bloom?
The route is built for it. If Tokyo has already peaked when you land, its petal-strewn rivers are still beautiful and Kyoto is usually a few days behind. Kyoto's sites also bloom in relay: Maruyama Park and Daigo-ji first, the Philosopher's Path and Heian Shrine's late weeping cherries after. And Lake Kawaguchi, at the end of the trip, blooms one to three weeks after the cities.
How far in advance should I book hotels?
Six months ahead is a safe target, and Kyoto rooms for the last week of March and the first week of April go first. Prices are the highest of the year, so book rooms with free cancellation as early as possible. Kawaguchiko's lakeside hotels with Fuji views fill early too, and the buses to and from the lake open seat bookings one month ahead.
How bad are the crowds during sakura season?
The famous spots are genuinely packed, especially on weekends. This itinerary puts the biggest names in the early morning (Senso-ji, Arashiyama, the Chureito Pagoda) and keeps evenings for illuminated blossoms. At the Chureito Pagoda the city ran a timed rotation on the observation deck at peak in 2026, with waits of one to three hours, which is why the plan sends you on the first train of the day.
