How cheap can two weeks in Japan really be?
With hostel dorms, konbini breakfasts, and cheap eats like ramen and gyudon, daily costs of 8,000 to 12,000 yen per person are realistic outside of transport. Long-distance trains are the main fixed cost, so choosing between single tickets, rail passes, and highway buses is where the real savings are.
Are Japanese hostels any good?
Generally very good: clean, quiet, and safe, with shared kitchens and curtained bunks in many of them. Every hostel in this plan is rated 8.6 or higher on Booking.com by more than a thousand guests. Business hotel chains like Toyoko Inn, which include breakfast, are the private-room upgrade that still fits a budget.
Should budget travelers get the JR Pass?
Not for this route. The JR legs (Odawara to Kyoto, Osaka to Hiroshima, Miyajima, Hiroshima to Kanazawa, Kanazawa to Tokyo) come to roughly 58,000 yen in single tickets with reserved seats, against 80,000 yen for a 14-day pass. A 7-day pass (50,000 yen) would cover day 4 to day 10, but the tickets in that window add up to only about 44,000 yen. Highway buses are the cheapest fallback: an overnight bus from Kanazawa to Tokyo costs about half the Shinkansen fare.
What food should I look for on a budget?
Ramen, udon, gyudon chains, kaiten sushi, and department store basement food halls near closing time are where to eat cheaply. Convenience store food in Japan is genuinely good, and a konbini breakfast costs a few hundred yen.
