Is Japan a good destination for kids?
One of the best. It is very safe, public transport is stroller-friendly outside rush hour, family restaurants have kids' menus, and stations and department stores have clean toilets with baby-changing tables. The bigger challenge is usually pace, which is why this itinerary keeps travel days short.
Do we need to book theme parks in advance?
Yes. Buy dated tickets for Tokyo Disney and Universal Studios online before your trip, and book teamLab Planets timed entry as soon as your dates are fixed (it sells no tickets at the door). The Ghibli Museum is the hardest: each month's tickets go on sale at 10 AM Japan time on the 10th of the month before, and popular days go quickly.
How do families handle luggage on this route?
Use takkyubin luggage forwarding between cities. Hotels arrange it at the front desk, bags sent from Tokyo reach Kyoto the next day, and you ride the Shinkansen with just daypacks. Yamato charges about 2,000 to 2,700 yen per suitcase between Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka, and it saves dragging four bags through stations.
Can four people share a hotel room in Japan?
Not in most city hotel rooms: many count children from age 6 as adults and cap a room at three. Apartment hotels like MIMARU are built for families of four, Toyoko Inn lets children of elementary school age or younger share a parent's bed free, and two rooms is the usual fallback elsewhere. Ryokan rooms with futons on tatami usually fit four.
