February is when Hokkaido becomes the Japan of postcards: metres of dry powder snow, steaming outdoor baths, and the Sapporo Snow Festival, when Odori Park fills with snow sculptures up to 15 metres tall (February 4 to 11 in 2027). This 7-day route flies into New Chitose and works south: three nights in Sapporo for the festival, the food, and a day trip to Otaru's gas-lit canal, one night soaking at Noboribetsu Onsen while Hell Valley steams against the snow, and two nights in Hakodate for one of the world's great night views and a seafood-market breakfast.

Two timing notes matter. If your dates target the Snow Festival, book Sapporo rooms months ahead; the city sells out. And winter here is properly cold (minus 5 to minus 10 in the evenings), so the itinerary alternates outdoor hours with long dinners and hot water. When is the Sapporo Snow Festival, and how far ahead should I book?

The festival runs for about a week every February; the 2027 edition is February 4 to 11, across the Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsu Dome sites. Sapporo hotels for the festival window sell out months in advance and rates double, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. The rest of this route (Noboribetsu, Hakodate) stays bookable much later.

How cold is Hokkaido in February, and what should I pack?

Expect daytime highs a few degrees below freezing and evenings of minus 5 to minus 10, with snow on the ground the whole trip. The non-negotiables are waterproof boots with grip (the packed snow on Sapporo's pavements is genuinely slippery), a proper down jacket, and gloves you can use a phone with. Indoors everything is heavily heated, so layers beat one huge sweater.

Can I add skiing to this itinerary?

Easily. Sapporo Teine, about an hour from the city, works as a day trip in the Sapporo block if you swap the free day. For a proper powder stay, add two or three Niseko nights before the Noboribetsu leg; buses run from both New Chitose Airport and Sapporo. This route as written needs no ski gear at all.

Why end in Hakodate instead of returning to Sapporo?

It turns the itinerary into a one-way line with no backtracking. Hakodate has its own airport 20 minutes from town with direct Tokyo flights, and the Hokkaido Shinkansen runs from nearby Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyo in about 4.5 hours, so you exit from where you finish. Winter is also Hakodate's best season: the night view is at its clearest and the Goryokaku fort's moat is illuminated on winter evenings.
