Osaka Himeji Kyoto

Kansai has more of the 100 Fine Castles within an hour or two of each other than any other corner of Japan, and this plan strings seven of them together by train: Osaka on arrival day, Akashi and Himeji going west, a night in Himeji so you can catch the morning train up to the Takeda ruins, then Hikone and Azuchi on the Lake Biwa side and Nijo in Kyoto before the flight home.

Two of the seven, Himeji and Hikone, still have the keeps built for them around 1600; the others range from Osaka's 1931 concrete museum to bare stone walls on a ridge. Which of the 100 Fine Castles does this trip cover?

Seven: Hikone (no. 50), Azuchi (no. 51), Nijo (no. 53), Osaka (no. 54), Takeda (no. 56), Akashi (no. 58) and Himeji (no. 59). Himeji and Hikone have original keeps; Osaka's keep is a 1931 concrete museum; Nijo is a palace whose keep burned in 1750; Akashi has two old corner turrets; Azuchi and Takeda are stone ruins on hilltops. If you are collecting the stamps, buy the official stamp book before you leave home, because the castles do not sell it.

When will I see the sea of clouds at Takeda Castle?

Cloud seas are likeliest from mid-September to early December, on still, clear mornings, and above all in late autumn. They form at dawn and usually burn off by mid-morning, so a morning train gives you a chance but no guarantee. The castle closes completely from January 4 to the end of February, so this trip does not work in those weeks.

How much walking is there?

More than on a city trip. Takeda is a 40-minute climb from the station (or a bus to the mid-slope stop and 900 m on foot, in daytime outside December), Azuchi is a straight stone stairway to the top of a hill, and Hikone's keep is a 10-minute climb from the gate with steep wooden stairs inside. Wear shoes with grip, and slip-on shoes help at Himeji and Hikone, where you take them off to go inside.

Why stay a night in Himeji?

Because Takeda is up a branch line. From Himeji the Hamakaze limited express reaches Takeda in under an hour, while from Kyoto or Osaka you would add another hour or more each way. Sleeping in Himeji also puts the castle and Koko-en on the doorstep for the afternoon before.
