Hokkaido Itinerary: 7 Days of Lavender, Food and Wide-Open Nature

While Honshu bakes in summer, Hokkaido stays mild and green, and this 7-day route is built around what the north does better than anywhere else: purple lavender fields in July, seafood straight off the boat, and horizons that go on for miles. You fly in and out of New Chitose Airport and travel by train, starting with three nights in Sapporo for soup curry, grilled lamb, and a night view from Mt Moiwa, plus an easy day trip to the canal town of Otaru. Then it is two nights in Furano for the flower farms and the patchwork hills of neighbouring Biei, before a final soak in the volcanic hot springs of Noboribetsu on the way back to the airport.
Timing matters more here than on any city trip. Lavender peaks from the middle to the end of July, and Furano's small stock of rooms sells out months ahead for that window, so book accommodation as early as you can. Frequently Asked Questions
When does the lavender bloom in Furano, and when is the best time to go?
Furano's lavender flowers from early July and peaks from roughly the middle to the end of July, when farms like Farm Tomita turn solid purple. Early August still has color but the main fields start being cut. If lavender is your reason to come, aim for the last two weeks of July and book rooms months ahead, as Furano has few beds and they sell out fast. The rest of Hokkaido's summer, from late June into September, is mild, green, and far cooler than Tokyo or Kyoto.
Do I need a car in Hokkaido?
For this itinerary, no, but a car helps in Biei. Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, and Noboribetsu are all connected by train, and this plan is designed around the rail network. The one weak spot is Biei, where the famous hills and the Blue Pond are scattered across farmland with thin bus service. Renting a car for that single day, or joining a half-day sightseeing bus tour from Furano or Biei station, makes the difference between seeing two spots and seeing all of them. Everywhere else, trains and your feet are enough.
Is Hokkaido worth it for a first trip to Japan, or is it better saved for a repeat visit?
It depends on what you want. If this is your first trip and you dream of temples, neon, and the classic Tokyo to Kyoto arc, do the Golden Route first, as Hokkaido has little of that. But if you are drawn to food, cool weather, and open nature more than historic cities, Hokkaido stands on its own even as a first trip, especially in summer. Many people come back for it precisely because the standard first itinerary skips it entirely, which is the case for the pairing this route was built to be.
How do I get to Hokkaido from Tokyo?
Flying is by far the easiest option. Tokyo to New Chitose Airport, which serves Sapporo, is about 90 minutes in the air and one of the busiest routes in the world, so fares are frequent and often cheap. From New Chitose a rapid airport train reaches Sapporo Station in about 40 minutes. The Hokkaido Shinkansen does not yet run all the way to Sapporo, so the train from Tokyo takes around eight hours with a change at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, which makes flying the clear choice for most travelers.
