Japan in April 2027: Cherry Blossoms, Weather and Crowds
Full bloom averages March 31 in Tokyo and April 4 in Kyoto, then the front heads north. April 2027 bloom windows, weather, hotel prices and Golden Week.
April is Japan's cherry blossom month, and its first days are the safest bet. In an average year the Japan Meteorological Agency's official trees reach full bloom on March 31 in Tokyo and April 4 in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, and the front then spends the rest of the month climbing north and uphill, reaching Sapporo in the last week. Days are mild, 10 to 19°C in Tokyo, and the evenings belong to lantern-lit blossoms.
The catches are crowds, prices and the calendar. April 2025 was the busiest month for foreign arrivals that JNTO has ever recorded (3.91 million), and April was again the busiest month of 2026 so far. In bloom week a Kyoto Station business hotel costs three to four times its January price, and the month ends in Golden Week, which opens on Thursday, April 29, 2027.
No 2027 forecast exists yet: the first rounds are due from mid December. Until then our 2027 cherry blossom forecast shows when every prefecture's official tree opened in the last six springs, and it switches to the forecast dates the day round one lands. Plan around the typical windows below, and book refundable.
The month runs in three acts. Act one, roughly April 1 to 7: full bloom or petal-fall in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, and peak prices. Act two, the underrated middle: the blossoms move north and uphill, and Kyoto's hotel prices halve. Act three starts on April 29 with Golden Week, which has its own section below because it wrecks more April itineraries than rain does.
Japan's Weather in April: Mild Days, Cool Nights
Tokyo averages 10 to 19°C across April, Kyoto 9 to 20°C and Osaka 11 to 20°C (JMA 1991 to 2020 normals). The month warms fast: early-April nights bottom out around 8°C in Tokyo and 7°C in Kyoto, while late-April afternoons reach 21 to 22°C. That spread matters, because half of hanami happens after dark.
Spring weather is changeable. Tokyo averages 134 mm of rain in April, with 1 mm or more on nine or ten days, usually a passing front rather than a week of grey. One hard rain at full bloom can strip the trees early, so watch the forecast that week. The light is on your side: the sun sets at 6:02 PM in Tokyo on April 1 and 6:26 PM on April 30 (6:17 to 6:41 in Kyoto).
One warning the brochures skip: April is still hay fever season. Tokyo's cedar pollen flies from early February to late April, and Japanese cypress (hinoki) takes over from mid March, peaking from late March into April. If pollen gets you at home, pack your usual allergy tablets (our medication guide covers the decongestants Japan bans), and do as the locals do with a mask on windy days.
The two ends of the country run on their own calendars. Sapporo sits between 3 and 12°C, snow can still lie in the city in the first days of the month, and lately its cherries have opened between April 15 and 23. Naha runs 19 to 24°C with 161 mm of rain; Okinawa's own cherries bloom in January and February, so April there is simply early summer.
When Do Cherry Blossoms Bloom in April? The Front, Week by Week
Sakura moves the opposite way to autumn color: south to north, and valley to mountain. Full bloom follows first bloom by about a week in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, but by only two to seven days in Sendai, Aomori and Sapporo, so the question is never "is April good for blossoms" but "which week, and how far north." The typical April calendar, from JMA's official trees and the Japan Weather Association's usual window for each spot:
| Usual peak | Where the bloom peaks |
|---|---|
| Late March to about April 7 | Tokyo (normal full bloom March 31), Kyoto, Osaka and Nara (April 4), Mt Yoshino's lower slopes |
| About April 1 to 15 | Kenroku-en in Kanazawa, Matsumoto Castle and Takato, Sendai and the Shiroishi River, Ninna-ji's late Omuro cherries in Kyoto, the Fuji Five Lakes (into late April) |
| About April 15 to 30 | Takayama, Kakunodate, Hirosaki Castle (into early May), Hakodate and Sapporo |
Two trends to plan around. First, the official normals now run late. Tokyo's full bloom came in March in five of the last six springs (between March 22 and 30; only 2024 reached April 4), so the famous first week of April is usually petal-fall in the capital, while Kyoto, whose full bloom ranged from March 24 to April 5, holds on a few days longer. The gap is widest in the north: Aomori's tree opened between April 7 and 17 against an April 22 normal, and Sapporo's between April 15 and 23 against May 1.
Second, the forecasts are good, and they start early. For the 2026 season Japan Meteorological Corporation published first, on December 18, 2025, followed by Weathernews on January 8 and the Japan Weather Association on January 29, with updates through the season. Our tracker moves onto the 2027 dates as soon as round one lands; for spot-by-spot detail, go to the forecasters' own pages at tenki.jp and Weathernews.
If the cities have already gone green when you land, do not mourn. Chase the bloom. North: the Hayabusa puts Sendai 1 hour 36 minutes from Tokyo, and Hirosaki Castle, our pick for the best single cherry blossom site in Japan, usually peaks from mid April to early May. Up: altitude delays the bloom the way latitude does, so the Fuji Five Lakes give you the Chureito Pagoda, Mt Fuji and cherries in one frame well after Tokyo has finished, and Takayama follows in mid to late April. A trip built for April 10 to 25 can catch full bloom twice, sometimes three times.
Hanami: How to Join a Cherry Blossom Picnic
Hanami is not a viewing activity, it is a picnic with a backdrop. The mechanics: someone claims a patch under the trees with a tarp, often the most junior person in the group, and everyone else arrives later with konbini bags. You can run the whole ritual for about ¥2,000 a head: a picnic sheet from a ¥100 shop (¥110 with tax), then a convenience store sweep for onigiri at ¥170 to ¥214, karaage, sakura mochi and a couple of cans.
Every park sets its own rules, and Tokyo's park authority asks visitors to follow each one. The big difference is alcohol: Shinjuku Gyoen bans it outright, which keeps its lawns calm, while Ueno Park in Ueno is the loud, sociable version. Two rules hold everywhere: take every scrap of rubbish with you, and never touch or shake the trees.
Yozakura, night blossoms, is the half of hanami first-timers skip and regret. In 2026 Ueno hung lanterns along Shinobazu Pond from March 14 to April 5, Chidorigafuchi lit its moat from March 26 to April 6, Kyoto's Maruyama Park lit its great weeping cherry from 18:00 to 22:00 (March 24 to April 8), and Kiyomizu-dera stayed open until 21:30 for its spring night viewing (March 27 to April 5). The 2027 dates move with the bloom, so check each one in March, and bring the warm layer you were tempted to leave at the hotel.
And learn the word hanafubuki, "flower snowstorm," for the days after full bloom when the wind takes the petals all at once. Locals will tell you it beats full bloom, and they are not being contrarian: the petal drifts in the gutters and the pink rafts on moats and rivers (hanaikada) are some of the best photographs of the season. Full bloom is a date. Hanafubuki is an event.
April has an atmosphere beyond the trees, too. The school year and the fiscal year both start on April 1, so bloom season doubles as the country's fresh-start week: entrance ceremonies, first-graders with giant randoseru backpacks, new recruits in identical navy suits. The blossoms are the national metaphor for all of it, which is part of why the whole country turns out to sit under them.
April Crowds and Hotel Prices: What Bloom Week Costs
Honesty first: April is Japan's busiest month. JNTO counted 3,909,128 foreign arrivals in April 2025, its highest monthly figure on record, and April 2026 (3,692,364) was again the busiest month of the year so far. Kyoto is the sharp end, and hotel prices show it. We checked APA, the same chain in all three cities, on its own booking site on September 29, 2026: the cheapest room for two, one night, tax included, against a January weeknight.
| Night in 2027 | Kyoto Station | Shinjuku | Namba, Osaka |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wed Jan 20 | ¥6,500– | ¥14,000– | ¥8,000– |
| Wed Mar 31 | ¥25,000– | ¥25,200– | ¥11,000– |
| Sat Apr 3 | ¥29,500– | ¥38,900– | ¥17,000– |
| Mon Apr 5 | ¥19,500– | ¥19,800– | ¥10,000– |
| Wed Apr 14 | ¥13,100– | ¥21,000– | ¥10,000– |
- Kyoto multiplies. Its station hotels cost 3.5 to 4 times January on the bloom-week Wednesday, and the Saturday costs more again.
- Saturdays are the real peak everywhere. Shinjuku's bloom-week Saturday ran 2.7 to 3 times January and even Namba doubled. The Monday after cost 25 to 50 percent less in all three cities.
- Mid April is the value window, in Kyoto. By April 14 Kyoto had dropped to about half its March 31 price, while Shinjuku stayed around 1.5 times January.
- Osaka barely moves midweek. Namba cost at most ¥3,400 more than January on every weeknight we checked.
The fixes are the same ones that work in foliage season, applied harder:
- Sleep in Osaka, sightsee in Kyoto. JR's Special Rapid runs from Osaka to Kyoto in 28 minutes for ¥580, and from Shin-Osaka the Shinkansen takes 13. Our Osaka stay guide has the areas, and the Kyoto and Tokyo guides cover what the bloom-week price buys.
- Aim midweek, and book refundable now. Six months out, every hotel in the table still had rooms, but all of them were already priced for the bloom.
- Go at opening, or before it. Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6:00 all year, and the Philosopher's Path and the Kamo River banks are open-air and free at dawn.
- In Tokyo, pay the ¥500. Shinjuku Gyoen's fee, alcohol ban and 9:00 opening filter out the party crowds, and its roughly 900 trees of about 70 varieties run from February to double cherries in mid April. In cherry season it opens on Mondays too (March 25 to April 24), but warns that weekend entry may need an advance reservation.
- Swap famous for nearly as good. Tokyo: Sumida Park by Asakusa. Kyoto: Ninna-ji's low, late Omuro cherries, which reached full bloom between April 2 and 16 in 2021 to 2025 by the temple's own record. Osaka: about 4,500 free trees along the Kema Sakuranomiya riverside, then the Mint's 560 m cherry passage of late double-flowered varieties, open for one week (April 9 to 15 in 2026) and by advance reservation only.
April 2027 Events: Geisha Dances, Takayama and Hirosaki
| Event | When |
|---|---|
| Kitano Odori (Kamishichiken, Kyoto) | Late March to early April (March 20 to April 2 in 2026) |
| Miyako Odori (Gion Kobu, Kyoto) | All of April (April 1 to 30 in 2026) |
| Kyo Odori (Miyagawacho, Kyoto) | First half of April (April 4 to 19 in 2026) |
| Kanamara Matsuri (Kawasaki) | First Sunday of April: Sunday, April 4, 2027 |
| Spring Takayama Festival | Fixed: Wednesday and Thursday, April 14 and 15, 2027 |
| Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival | Mid April to May 5 (April 10 to May 5 in 2026) |
| Kakunodate Sakura Festival | Mid April to May 5 (April 15 to May 5 in 2026) |
| Golden Week | Thursday, April 29, then Monday to Wednesday, May 3 to 5 |
Most 2027 dates aren't out yet, so treat the 2026 pattern as a guide until the organizers post them: Hirosaki moved its 2026 festival a week earlier to meet an early bloom.
Miyako Odori, all of April in Gion. The geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu have staged this spring dance since 1872, and it is the most accessible way to see the real thing rather than a costumed photo op. In 2026 it ran three shows a day (12:30, 14:30 and 16:30) at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, with seats from ¥4,000 and ¥7,000 including tea; tickets went on sale on January 6 and cannot be refunded. The official site posts the 2027 program.
Spring Takayama Festival, April 14 and 15 every year. Twelve festival floats line up in the old town, three of them perform karakuri puppet shows twice a day, and on the night of the 14th all twelve roll through the streets hung with lanterns (18:00 to 20:30 in 2026). The organizers warn that lodging in town is full more than six months ahead, so look outside the center or day-trip from Nagoya, about 2 hours 40 minutes on the Hida limited express (JR added extra trains on both days in 2026). The festival falls at the very start of Takayama's usual mid-to-late April bloom, so don't count on floats and full bloom together.
Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, mid April to May 5. About 2,600 trees of 52 kinds grow around Hirosaki's castle park, many of them Somei Yoshino over a century old, and the moats and keep are lit until 22:00. Rent a rowboat on the west moat (¥1,500 a boat for an hour in 2026), then walk the outer-moat banks the festival opens for the hanaikada, when fallen petals cover the water edge to edge. The park is free and the Honmaru costs ¥320; the keep itself is being moved back onto its restored base until about mid November 2026, so check the festival page for whether its interior reopens for spring.
Kanamara Matsuri, the first Sunday of April (April 4 in 2027) in Kawasaki. Yes, that festival: a Shinto fertility celebration at Kanayama Shrine with three anatomically unapologetic portable shrines, a minute's walk from Keikyu's Kawasaki-Daishi Station and entirely good-natured.
The food calendar earns its line, as ever. Hatsugatsuo, the first bonito of the year, hits menus seared as tataki, and takenoko, fresh bamboo shoots, turn up in rice dishes and tempura for a few weeks only. The konbini shelves go fully pink: sakura lattes, sakura mochi, sakura everything, most of it gone by May.
Golden Week 2027: April 29 to May 5
Read this part twice if your trip touches the end of the month. Showa Day, Thursday April 29, opens Golden Week, and Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children's Day follow on Monday to Wednesday, May 3 to 5. Friday April 30 is a normal working day, so anyone who takes it off gets seven days in a row, April 29 to May 5.
JR Central prices April 28 to May 5, 2027 as peak season, and on the busiest holidays it runs every Nozomi with reserved seats only: in 2026 that covered April 24 to May 6, and the 2027 dates go up on JR Central's Nozomi page. Without a reservation on those days you stand in the vestibule, if you can board at all.
The rules, in order of importance:
- Don't plan intercity travel between April 28 and May 5 without bookings in hand. Turning up at the station and winging it, which works beautifully in Japan most of the year, fails here.
- Book the moment sales open. Shinkansen reserved seats go on sale one month ahead at 10:00 (smartEX sells some a year ahead; our Shinkansen booking guide has the steps), and book every hotel night before you fly.
- The elegant solution: end the trip by April 27, or pick one base and stay put. Cities stay busy but workable over Golden Week; it is the moving between them that hurts.
- Hokkaido is the exception worth planning. Hakodate and Sapporo have reached full bloom around April 20 to 28 lately, just before the holiday, so a northern finale works if it is booked early.
What to Pack for Japan in April
- Layers built around a light jacket or trench. Mid-April afternoons reach about 20°C and early-April nights fall to 7 or 8°C, often on the same day.
- A folding umbrella: Tokyo sees rain on nine or ten April days.
- Your usual allergy tablets if pollen bothers you at home. Japanese drugstores stock good ones, but arriving mid-sneeze at midnight is no time to learn the packaging.
- A packable picnic sheet, or ¥110 at the first ¥100 shop you pass. The single highest-value item of an April trip.
- Slip-on shoes for temples, with respectable socks. People will see them.
- A warm layer for Hokkaido or the mountains: Sapporo's late-April nights average 5°C.
April vs March vs May
Pick late March if you want to gamble on the front edge. Tokyo's full bloom landed in the last ten days of March in five of the last six springs, and JMA's normal puts it on March 31. The trade: Tokyo's March averages 5 to 14°C, a coat colder, and the Nozomi runs all-reserved over the March 20 to 22, 2027 holiday weekend. Our Japan in March guide covers it.
Pick May if weather beats blossoms. From May 6, the first working day after Golden Week, Japan settles into warm, fresh-green weather (Tokyo 15 to 24°C), with Ashikaga's wisteria running from mid April to mid May. The trade: by then the cherry front has left everywhere but the far north and east of Hokkaido. See our Japan in May guide.
Pick April if the blossoms are the point, and commit properly. The first week for Kyoto, Osaka and Nara at their famous best, priced at three to four times January in Kyoto. The second and third weeks for the smarter version: the bloom in the mountains and the north, Kyoto at half the bloom-week price, and Miyako Odori and Takayama on the calendar. Just respect the April 29 cliff edge. For the full year, the Best Time to Visit Japan guide compares all twelve months.
A 10-Day Cherry Blossom Route for April 2027
Our 10-Day Cherry Blossom itinerary (Tokyo, Kawaguchiko, Kyoto, Osaka) is built for this season, and its structure is the insurance policy: Kawaguchiko blooms one to three weeks after Tokyo, so the route carries its own second chance if the cities peak early. The April adjustments:
- Traveling April 1 to 10: run it as written. Tokyo delivers late full bloom or hanafubuki, Kyoto usually holds a few days longer, and Kawaguchiko will be somewhere between buds and opening, with snow on Fuji as the consolation. Book the Kyoto nights first; they are the scarce, expensive resource.
- Traveling April 10 to 20: flip the weight. The cities are greening, so give Kawaguchiko the extra night for the Chureito Pagoda at peak and go at dawn: in 2026 its observation deck ran a timed rotation with waits of 1 to 3 hours. Consider folding in Matsumoto or Takayama around the festival on the 14th and 15th, and in Kyoto point yourself at Ninna-ji's Omuro cherries and a Miyako Odori ticket.
- Traveling April 20 to 28: swap the Kansai leg for the north. Tokyo, then Kakunodate (on the Akita Shinkansen; see our Akita guide) and Hirosaki, then across to Hakodate or Sapporo. End the trip by the 27th, or re-read the Golden Week section and book like you mean it.
Open the template in the trip planner, drop it onto your dates, and keep one day loose so you can chase whichever forecast update says "full bloom." The cherry blossom forecast will have the 2027 dates from mid December.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is April a good time to visit Japan?
Yes, if cherry blossoms are the point. In an average year JMA's official trees reach full bloom on March 31 in Tokyo and April 4 in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, and the front then moves north and uphill all month, reaching Sapporo in the last week. The catches: April is the busiest month for foreign visitors (3.91 million in April 2025), Kyoto Station hotels cost three to four times their January price in bloom week, and Golden Week starts on Thursday, April 29, 2027. Mid April is the underrated window: blossoms in the mountains and the north, and Kyoto rooms at about half the bloom-week price.
When will the cherry blossoms bloom in 2027?
No 2027 forecast exists yet: the first rounds are due from mid December 2026, and our cherry blossom forecast switches to them the day they land. Until then, plan on JMA's normals: first flowers around March 24 and full bloom around March 31 in Tokyo, March 26 and April 4 in Kyoto. Recent springs have run early: Tokyo's full bloom fell between March 22 and April 4 in 2021 to 2026, and Sapporo's tree opened between April 15 and 23 every year, against a May 1 normal.
Can I still see cherry blossoms in mid or late April?
Yes, by going north or uphill. Kenroku-en in Kanazawa, Matsumoto Castle, Sendai and the Shiroishi River usually peak in the first half of April and the Fuji Five Lakes run into late April. Takayama and Kakunodate's samurai district follow in mid to late April, and Hirosaki Castle runs from mid April into early May. Hakodate and Sapporo have reached full bloom around April 20 to 28 in recent years.
How crowded and expensive is Japan in April?
April is Japan's busiest month: JNTO counted 3,909,128 foreign arrivals in April 2025, its highest monthly figure on record. On APA's own site, the cheapest room for two near Kyoto Station cost 25,000 to 31,600 yen on Wednesday, March 31, 2027, against 6,500 to 8,500 yen in January, and 29,500 to 36,800 yen on Saturday, April 3. By Wednesday, April 14 it was down to 13,100 to 17,000 yen. Osaka's Namba barely moves on weeknights, so sleeping there and riding 28 minutes into Kyoto is the classic saving.
What is Golden Week 2027 and should I avoid it?
Golden Week 2027 runs from Showa Day on Thursday, April 29 to Children's Day on Wednesday, May 5, with Constitution Day and Greenery Day on May 3 and 4; take Friday the 30th off and it is seven days in a row. JR Central prices April 28 to May 5 as peak season and runs the Nozomi reserved-only on its busiest days (April 24 to May 6 in 2026). If your dates are flexible, finish your intercity travel by April 27; if not, book trains the moment seats go on sale a month ahead and stay in one base over the holiday.
What is the weather like in Japan in April?
Mild and changeable. JMA's normals give Tokyo 10 to 19°C, Kyoto 9 to 20°C and Osaka 11 to 20°C, with early-April nights around 7 to 8°C and late-April afternoons at 21 to 22°C. Tokyo gets 134 mm of rain on nine or ten days. Sapporo runs 3 to 12°C and Naha 19 to 24°C. Bring a light jacket for evening hanami, and allergy tablets if you react to pollen: cypress pollen peaks in Tokyo from late March into April.
10-Day Cherry Blossom Season
Chase sakura across Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, then finish at Lake Kawaguchi, where the cherries bloom one to three weeks later under Mt Fuji. Built for late March to mid April.
